How to Measure for Custom Curtains

How to Measure for Custom Curtains

Getting accurate measurements ensures your custom curtains fit perfectly. Follow this simple guide.

What You'll Need

  • A metal tape measure (not fabric)
  • A step stool for high windows
  • Pen and paper to record measurements

Step 1: Measure the Width

Measure the width of your curtain rod (not the window). If you don't have a rod yet, measure the window width and add 4-8 inches on each side for proper coverage.

For standard coverage: Rod width = Window width + 8 to 16 inches

Step 2: Measure the Length

Measure from the top of the curtain rod to where you want the curtain to end:

  • Sill length — to the window sill (casual look)
  • Below sill — 4 inches below the sill (classic look)
  • Floor length — ½ inch above the floor (elegant look)
  • Puddle — 1-3 inches on the floor (dramatic, luxurious look)

Step 3: Understanding Fullness

Fullness refers to how much fabric gathers across your rod:

  • 1x fullness — flat panel, no gathers (use if you already added extra width)
  • 1.5x fullness — standard, gentle gathers
  • 2x fullness — full, luxurious gathers (recommended for pinch pleat & pencil pleat)

Our custom curtain configurator handles fullness calculations automatically — just enter your rod width.

Step 4: Choose Number of Panels

Most windows use 2 panels (one on each side). For narrow windows, 1 panel may be enough. For very wide windows, consider 3-4 panels.

Tips

  • Measure each window separately — they may vary slightly
  • Round up to the nearest inch
  • When in doubt, go slightly wider and longer
