Measuring for Custom Curtains: It's Easier Than You Think

Getting the right measurements is the most important step when ordering custom curtains. Don't worry — it takes about 5 minutes per window and only requires a tape measure. Here's how.

Before You Start

You'll need:

  • A metal tape measure (not fabric — they stretch)
  • A step stool if your windows are high
  • Pen and paper to note measurements

Important: If you already have a curtain rod installed, measure the rod — not the window. If you don't have a rod yet, measure the window and follow the guidelines below.

Step 1: Measure the Width

If you have a rod:

Measure from one end of the rod to the other (bracket to bracket). This is your curtain width.

If you don't have a rod yet:

Measure the window opening width, then add:

  • 4-6 inches on each side for light gap coverage
  • Total: Window width + 8-12 inches = recommended rod width

Example: 40" window → 48-52" rod → order 50" wide curtains

Step 2: Measure the Length

Measure from the top of where the rod is (or will be) down to where you want the curtain to end:

  • Window sill: To the sill (great for kitchens and bathrooms)
  • Below sill: 4" below the sill (classic cafe look)
  • Floor length: To 0.5" above the floor (most popular — elegant without dragging)
  • Puddle: Add 1-3" extra to pool on the floor (dramatic, luxurious)

Header Adjustments

Different headers hang differently:

  • Rod Pocket & Grommet: Measure from the top of the rod
  • Tab Top: Curtain will hang about 2" below the rod
  • Pinch Pleat & Pencil Pleat: Measure from the bottom of the rings/hooks to where you want the curtain to end

Step 3: Choose Number of Panels

  • 1 panel: Narrow windows (under 40"), or pulling to one side
  • 2 panels: Standard — one on each side (most common)
  • 3-4 panels: Extra-wide windows or sliding doors

Understanding Fullness

Fullness is the ratio of fabric width to rod width. More fullness = more gathers:

  • 1x fullness: Flat panel, minimal gathers. Choose this if you already accounted for extra width in your measurement.
  • 1.5x fullness: Standard gathers — a nice balance of fullness and fabric use.
  • 2x fullness: Full, luxurious gathers — recommended for pinch pleat and pencil pleat headers.

Our custom configurator calculates fullness and pricing automatically.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Measuring the window instead of the rod — always measure from the rod
  2. Forgetting side coverage — extend the rod 4-6" beyond the window on each side
  3. Rounding down — when in doubt, round up to the nearest inch
  4. Assuming all windows are the same size — measure each window individually
